WWith inflation driving up prices across the board, we’ve been looking for happy hour spots where two people can eat well on a $45 budget. Our $45 Hana Peace for 2 Series highlights where quality and value align. This time, we landed on Little Joe’s Steakhouse. On the edge of Chinatown, the Little Joe’s Nimitz location feels like a typical American steakhouse: white tablecloths, dark wood interiors, and warm lighting. But don’t let the fancy atmosphere fool you: its daily happy hour menu makes it surprisingly approachable. That’s because Little Joe’s is the more casual little brother of Signature Prime…

This piece from March 2011 has been trending on our page views, so we’re reproducing it here as a Friday treat. Photo: Melissa Chang TThe other night at the Red Cross, I took a photo of these sweet potato haupia squares, and it caused such a stir! It tasted even better than it looks, with a rich sweet goodness that melted in my mouth with every bite. People demanded to know the recipe. Well, you’re in luck. The woman who made the dessert, Ms. Tanaka, agreed to share her recipe. Oh, and if you need a taste tester to tell…

A special edition of Hawaii Home + Remodeling magazine, presented by aio Hawaii and the Hawai’i Community Foundation. Photo: Sean Marrs When aio Hawai’i i Hawai’i Home + Remodeling presented the first Hawaii Disaster Preparedness Guide in 2023, wildfires in Lahaina, Maui, gave our island community a moment of deep pause and reflection. We’ve learned that even in our heavenly Aloha State, disasters can strike at any time, and it takes a village to help everyone prepare and stay connected through them. Now in its third edition, Disaster Preparedness in Hawaii continues to build on relationships and shared knowledge as…

Last updated on July 10, 2023 Last May we made our Disney dreams come true with our family’s first trip to Disneyland Paris. Disneyland Paris is the only Disney in Europe, located just outside the city of Paris. Although I have been to Disney in California and Florida, this was me and JC’s first time at a Disney outside the US. We decided to make it a pre-birthday for Isabella, who turned three on June 1st. (FYI, children under three are FREE at Disney!!) My parents also joined us from the US for this momentous occasion. Below, find out everything…

Last updated on April 7, 2025 In May this year we made our highland road trip dreams come true with a four-day trip to Scotland for my birthday. Last November, Britain changed some entry rules and regulations with a few countries, including Peru. So JC was finally able to travel to Britain without a visa (he has a Peruvian passport). With this great news we took the opportunity and booked flights to Edinburgh and from Glasgow. We had 4 full days to travel from Edinburgh to Glasgow by car. With so many awe-inspiring locations in Scotland to see, it was…

Last updated on February 16, 2025 In March we traveled to Lima to visit JC’s family and escape the cold of Berlin. JC and I always try to take mini trips while visiting his family in Peru to discover new destinations, for example Cusco, Ica, Mancora, etc. This time I really wanted to go to the Amazon jungle. We originally planned to go to Madre de Dios. However, due to the protests in that part of Peru, we decided it was too dangerous to travel and rebooked our travel plans for Tarapoto instead. Tarapoto is a city north of Lima,…

Last updated on August 21, 2025 This summer we decided to make our holiday in Greece. If you’ve been following our travels, you know that Greece is our absolute favorite summer holiday destination. Beautiful sea, amazing food and friendly people make Greece the best summer spot. Furthermore, the Greeks are incredibly accommodating with children. There are a number of Greek islands with direct flight connections from Berlin. This time we decided to go to the island of Corfu. An easy 2 hour direct flight, and we paid around 150 euros per person round trip at the end of August –…

Last Updated on September 9, 2025 JC and I had India on our bucket list for the last few years. During COVID we had become Indian food aficionados; cooking Indian food online with a chef based out of Jodhpur, we soon were cooking homemade Indian food weekly. I watched my favorite YouTubers Steve & Jess of Flying the Nest travel to India and fell in love with the idea of a trip to India. Between the delicious food and the awe inspiring sights, we knew that India would be the trip of a lifetime. With so many musts on our…

Last updated on June 23, 2025 Last May, I decided to book tickets for us to Stockholm, Sweden for my birthday weekend. Why Stockholm? Firstly, I found cheap direct flights from Berlin (435 EUR for the four of us). Secondly, we’ve been wanting to explore more of Scandinavia for a while and Stockholm was at the top of the list. Stockholm is also just a 1.5-hour flight from Berlin. And finally, although Stockholm is usually pricey for accommodation, I found us 4 nights in a 2-bedroom apartment for less than 200 EUR (total!) using the home exchange app Related. Read…
